Local SEO in 2026 is no longer won on Google Maps alone. US consumers still start most local searches on Google, but 45% now also ask AI tools for local recommendations, and AI answers name far fewer businesses than the Local Pack does.
This page collects the local SEO stats and local search statistics that matter in 2026. Each figure carries its publisher, sample and date, and each section ends with something you can check on your own site. Most consumer figures come from US surveys, so they describe US behavior, not global behavior.
Key Takeaways
- Google still opens the search. 52% of US consumers started their latest local search on Google Search and 9% on Google Maps (BrightLocal, July 2026).
- Review standards jumped in one year. 68% will only use a business rated four stars or higher, up from 55% in 2025.
- Phones dominate. 73% of US local searches start on a phone, so mobile rendering decides first impressions.
- AI is a new layer, not a replacement. Google Maps named a tracked business in 66% of local searches, against 32% to 38% for AI answers.
- Your website feeds AI answers. Business websites made up 42% of all citations in local AI answers, and Google Business Profiles 28.5%.
- Fake reviews are now a legal risk. FTC penalties reach $53,088 per violation, and Google blocked or removed 292 million+ policy-violating reviews in 2025.
The Three Layers of Local Visibility
A local business now has to be found in three places, and each one fails for different reasons.
- Search visibilityGoogle Search, the Local Pack and Google Maps. Decided by GBP category, proximity, reviews and prominence.
- Website visibilityOrganic results and local landing pages. Decided by service pages, crawlability, mobile performance and structured data.
- AI visibilityAI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Decided by citations from your site, your GBP and "best of" lists.
Most local SEO advice covers only the first layer. The statistics below show why the second and third now carry real weight.
Local Search Statistics: How US Consumers Find Businesses
US consumers decide fast and from short lists, so a business has to appear in the first few options to be considered at all.
BrightLocal survey of 1,227 US consumers who searched for a local business in the previous three months, published July 2026.
| Statistic | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Used Google Search at some point in the search | 71% | BrightLocal, Jul 2026 |
| Used social media / AI tools / review sites | 30% / 23% / 19% | BrightLocal, Jul 2026 |
| Chose a business in under 30 minutes | 75% | BrightLocal, Jun 2026 |
| Looked at three or fewer businesses | 72% | BrightLocal, Jun 2026 |
| Small businesses in the US | 36.2 million | SBA Office of Advocacy, Feb 2026 |
What it means for your site: with three or fewer options compared, a location page that loads slowly, shows the wrong hours or fails to render on mobile is effectively removed from the shortlist.
Google Business Profile and Google Maps Statistics
Most small businesses have a Business Profile, but only about a third actively maintain it, while Google Maps serves over 2 billion monthly users.
| Statistic | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Google Maps monthly users (global) | 2 billion+ | Alphabet, Oct 2024 |
| US small business owners with a GBP | 85% | BrightLocal SMB report, Oct 2026 |
| Owners who keep an active GBP presence | 35% | BrightLocal SMB report, Oct 2026 |
| Owners who updated their GBP in the past week | 30% | BrightLocal SMB report, Oct 2026 |
| User-suggested edits to business details on Maps (2025) | 80 million | Google, Apr 2026 |
| Inaccurate or unverified edits Google blocked (2025) | 79 million | Google, Apr 2026 |
| Consumers who checked proximity / star rating / review count | 44% / 38% / 37% | BrightLocal, Jul 2026 |
| Consumers who just clicked the first result | 6% | BrightLocal, Jul 2026 |
Google's own rules are worth auditing: the profile name must match the real-world business name, a service area should stay within about two hours' drive, and a profile can list up to 20 service areas. Google publishes no Local Pack click-through rates and no average profile views, so treat any figure claiming otherwise with caution.
Audit angle: 80 million suggested edits a year means your hours, phone and address can change without you. Compare GBP data against your website and schema on a schedule. Scheduled audits and audit comparison flag when on-site details drift.
Online Review Statistics and Consumer Trust
Nearly every US consumer reads local reviews, and in 2026 they want higher ratings, more reviews and more recent ones than a year earlier.
| Statistic | 2025 | 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| "Always" read reviews | 29% | 41% |
| Only use businesses rated 4 stars or higher | 55% | 68% |
| Require 4.5 stars or higher | 17% | 31% |
| Want reviews from the last two weeks | 20% | 32% |
| Use Google for local reviews | 83% | 71% |
| Use Apple Maps for local reviews | 14% | 27% |
BrightLocal Local Consumer Review Survey 2026, 1,002 US adults, published February 2026.
The same survey found 97% read reviews for local businesses, 47% won't use a business with fewer than 20 reviews, 74% look for reviews from the last three months, 80% are likely to use a business that replies to all reviews, and 50% are put off by templated replies.
Two shifts stand out. Review recency now matters as much as rating, so review velocity is a ranking and conversion signal at once. And Google's share as a review source fell 12 points while Apple Maps nearly doubled, which makes Apple Business Connect worth adding to the local checklist. If your site describes the business poorly, fix the missing business description first.
Audit angle: 54% of consumers visit the business website after reading positive reviews. That visit lands on a location or service page, so its speed, accuracy and calls to action finish the job the reviews started.
Mobile Local Search Statistics
Three in four US local searches start on a phone, so mobile rendering is a local ranking and conversion issue, not a design preference.
| Statistic | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| US adults who own a smartphone | 91% | Pew Research Center, Oct 2026 |
| Latest local search started on phone / computer / tablet | 73% / 19% / 8% | BrightLocal, Jul 2026 |
| Phone-first searches, ages 30 to 44 vs over 60 | 86% vs 57% | BrightLocal, Jul 2026 |
| US web page views from mobile (Sep 2026) | 49.04% | StatCounter |
| Worldwide web page views from mobile (Sep 2026) | 59.06% | StatCounter |
Google indexes the mobile version of your pages. Check that location pages render their address, hours, map embed and click-to-call link without JavaScript errors, and that Core Web Vitals pass on mobile, not just desktop.
Local SEO Ranking Factors
Google says local results rest on relevance, distance and prominence, and that no one can pay for a better local ranking. It publishes no weights. The best public estimate is Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey, in which 47 practitioners scored 187 factors. These are expert judgments, not measured rankings.
| Signal group | Local Pack and Maps | Local organic | AI visibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | 32% | 12% | |
| Reviews | 20% | 16% | |
| On-page | 15% | 33% | 24% |
| Behavioral | 9% | 10% | |
| Links | 8% | 24% | 13% |
| Citations | 6% | 13% |
Whitespark, published November 2025. Blank cells were not reported in the summary figures.
The top single factors: primary GBP category leads the Local Pack, a dedicated page for each service leads local organic results, and presence on expert-curated "best of" lists leads AI visibility.
The pattern matters more than any one number. Pack rankings lean on the profile. Organic and AI visibility lean on your website, and that is where technical SEO enters local SEO. For site-level data across many domains, see our technical SEO study.
AI Search and Local Business Discovery
AI tools jumped from 6% to 45% of US consumers for local recommendations in a year, yet AI answers name a tracked business roughly half as often as Google Maps does.
BrightLocal tracking study of 200,085 localized, non-branded searches for 1,300 business locations, published September 2026.
| Statistic | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Trust AI to recommend businesses | 40% | BrightLocal LCRS 2026 |
| Read AI review summaries when choosing | 82% | BrightLocal LCRS 2026 |
| Started on an AI tool and used no other channel | 2% | BrightLocal, Jul 2026 |
| Businesses named per answer: ChatGPT / AI Mode / AI Overviews | 4.1 / 3.5 / 2.5 | BrightLocal, Sep 2026 |
| Citations pointing to business websites / GBPs | 42% / 28.5% | BrightLocal, Sep 2026 |
| Locations ChatGPT recommended vs in the local 3-Pack | 1.2% vs 35.9% | SOCi, Jan 2026 |
| AI citations from brand-managed sources | 86% | Yext, Oct 2025 |
Traditional Search vs AI Search: What Is Changing
The shift is from ranking to being selected. A Local Pack shows three businesses; an AI Overview names about 2.5. Fewer slots means the gap between the first and fourth business grows.
- Consumers verify. 43% of people who started on an AI tool went on to check Google. AI shapes the shortlist; Google still confirms it.
- Your website is the main citation source. Business sites were 93% of unique cited domains in local AI answers. A site AI crawlers cannot reach or parse loses that slot.
- Clicks shrink when summaries appear. Pew found users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits with an AI summary, against 15% without (March 2025, all searches, not only local).
To measure this layer, use the AI Visibility Tracker.
Technical SEO Issues That Affect Local Visibility
The statistics above point to site-level problems that quietly cost local businesses rankings, clicks and AI citations. Check that:
- Every service and location has its own indexable page, not a thin template. A dedicated page per service is the top local organic factor.
- Location pages are linked internally and are not orphan pages.
- LocalBusiness schema is present and valid. Test it with the Schema Markup Validator.
- Name, address and phone match across page text, schema and your Business Profile.
- Google, Bing and AI bots can all crawl the site, and AI crawlers are not blocked. Look for robots.txt rules and 403 errors that block them.
- Address, hours and call buttons render on mobile with JavaScript rendering enabled.
- Self-hosted review widgets don't carry star markup, which Google treats as ineligible for review rich results.
- Location pages carry no stray noindex directives or canonicals pointing elsewhere.
The full list is in the Local SEO Checklist, and a done-for-you review is available as a Local SEO Audit.
Fake Reviews: Platform Enforcement and the Law
Buying or gating reviews now risks fines in the US and UK on top of Google penalties.
| Rule or action | Detail | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Policy-violating reviews blocked or removed | 292 million+ (2025) | Google, Apr 2026 |
| Fake Business Profiles removed | 13 million+ (2025) | Google, Apr 2026 |
| FTC Consumer Review Rule in force | Since October 21, 2024 | Federal Register |
| Maximum FTC civil penalty | $53,088 per violation | FTC, Dec 2025 |
| UK fake and undisclosed paid reviews banned | Since April 6, 2025 | DMCC Act, CMA |
| Maximum CMA fine | 10% of global turnover | CMA, Jan 2025 |
Google can freeze new reviews, unpublish existing ones and show a warning on profiles caught using fake engagement. Selective review gating, where only happy customers are asked, is also prohibited under Google Maps policy.
Older Local SEO Stats (2016 to 2018): What They Actually Measured
Many local SEO statistics still ranking today come from 2016 to 2018 Google research with the year removed. They were accurate for their time, but they describe a market before AI answers and before the 2026 review standards above.
| Year | Often quoted as | What the source measured | Use in 2026? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2016 | 76% of near-me searchers visit within a day | May 2016 Google-commissioned diary study, 1,000 US smartphone users | No, never updated |
| 2016 | 1.5 billion near-me searches a month | Monthly store visits related to searches, not searches | No, wrong measure |
| 2016 | 30% of mobile searches are location related | Google search data, global, April 2016 | Context only |
| 2017 | Local searches without "near me" grew 150% | US searches, H1 2015 vs H1 2017 | Useful as a trend |
| 2017 to 2018 | Near-me searches grew 900% | US mobile "near me today/tonight", H2 2015 vs H2 2017 | Context only |
| 2018 | 46% of Google searches have local intent | Never published by Google | No |
| 2018 | 58% use voice search for local businesses | BrightLocal survey of 1,012 US consumers | No, not repeated |
Rule of thumb: if a local search stat has no publisher, sample and year attached, don't quote it. The 2026 figures earlier on this page replace every row above.
How to Measure Local SEO Performance
Industry local SEO stats set priorities, but your own data judges results. Track each layer separately:
- Search layer: GBP calls, direction requests, website clicks and Local Pack rank by grid point.
- Website layer: location page impressions and clicks in Search Console, indexation status and mobile Core Web Vitals. The free GSC Analyzer helps here.
- AI layer: the share of a fixed local prompt set where your business is named or cited.
- Timing: new location pages need time to rank. See how long SEO takes to work before judging results.
- Reputation layer: review count, average rating, monthly review velocity and reply rate.
