Tracking and pixels audit
Find every GA4, Google Tag Manager, Meta, TikTok and other analytics tag, pixel and event across a site, and fix double counting and missing tags.
Improve > Tracking & Pixels lists every analytics tool, tag manager, ad pixel and event on the site, reads inside each Google Tag Manager container, and shows what needs fixing and what was fixed since the last audit.
What is detected
24 tools and their IDs, automatically: Google Tag Manager, GA4, Universal Analytics, Google Ads, Meta, TikTok, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Snap, X, Reddit, Microsoft Ads, Clarity, Hotjar, Plausible, Matomo, PostHog, Segment, Mixpanel, Amplitude, Ahrefs, HubSpot, Klaviyo and Shopify Web Pixels.
Tabs
- Tags & pixels: tool, ID, status (OK, or Needs fixing with the reasons), how it loads (hard-coded, inside GTM, or both), pages and coverage, and New or Removed since the last audit.
- Events: every event found, where (page code, GTM, dataLayer, fired on load) and its GTM trigger.
- Inside GTM: every tag in each container. See Audit a Google Tag Manager container.
- Needs fixing / fixed: open tracking issues, and those fixed since the last audit.
- Consent & cookies and Third-party scripts.
Each tab exports to CSV.
The problems that matter most
Double counting is the most common and most expensive tracking bug, because it inflates page views and conversions and misleads ad bidding:
- Tag loaded twice on the page: the same GTM container or gtag.js appears twice, often once in the theme and once from a plugin.
- GA4 sent by page code and by GTM: keep GA4 in one place, ideally GTM.
- Page view sent twice on one page load: confirmed from the requests the browser really sent. Needs JavaScript rendering.
Coverage gaps come next: no analytics at all, a page missing the tag, or a page reporting to a different GA4 ID.
See what really fires
Without rendering, detection uses page code and the published GTM container. Turn on Render JavaScript in Crawl Settings to also record the tracking requests each page sends while loading and scrolling, the dataLayer, and cookies. See JavaScript rendering.
Scores
Tracking issues have their own Tracking score and never lower SEO site health. They still flow into the Action Plan, the issues CSV, Slack and Linear like every other issue.
Limits, on purpose
- Nothing is clicked or submitted. Forms, sign-ups and purchases are never triggered on a live site; the GTM tab shows which events are set up for those actions.
- Server-side GTM, tags added by browser extensions and events behind logins are not visible.
- Up to 5 GTM containers are read per audit, the ones on the most pages.
