Independent SiteAuditLint analysis

SiteAuditLint crawled 100 URLs on coursera.org and found no critical issues. The findings are concentrated in the shared footer and page template: a footer PDF link that failed on 85 pages, a footer link that redirects off-site on 93 pages, and HTML over 500 KB on 71 pages.

What stood out

0critical issues across 100 crawled URLs
85pages link to a footer PDF on an S3 bucket that could not be reached
71pages have HTML over 500 KB, including the 796 KB homepage
36URLs responded in over 1 second, the slowest at 3,905 ms
65pages carry FAQ or Q&A structured data

Overall assessment

coursera.org returned clean status codes: no 4xx or 5xx responses, HTTPS throughout, and a single 301 from the bare domain. Every analyzed page had a title, a meta description and a canonical, and 65 pages carry FAQ or Q&A structured data. All nine AI crawlers are allowed.

Most warnings trace to shared components. The footer links to a Modern Slavery Statement PDF on an S3 hostname containing an underscore (coursera_assets.s3.amazonaws.com), which failed to connect on 85 pages. The same footer links to /about/leadership, which 301 redirects to the Coursera blog.

Response time and page weight deserve attention after the footer. One template detail is also worth fixing: the /partners page declares a malformed canonical with the hostname repeated in the path.

Audit methodology

SiteAuditLint started from the website's homepage and crawled up to 100 URLs by following discoverable internal links and the URLs listed in the XML sitemap. Results represent the URLs reached during the crawl and do not constitute a complete audit of the entire website.

Major findings

1. Footer PDF link that fails to connect

Medium

85 affected pages · SiteAuditLint severity: Warning

Finding: 85 pages link to a Modern Slavery Statement PDF at coursera_assets.s3.amazonaws.com. The request failed with a connection error. 94 pages in total link to at least one broken external URL.

Why it matters: Underscores are not valid in hostnames for many HTTPS clients, which is a likely reason the connection fails. A broken legal document link in the footer repeats sitewide. See broken link checker.

URLBroken target
https://www.coursera.org/coursera_assets.s3.amazonaws.com/footer/Modern+Slavery+Statement... [ConnectError]
https://www.coursera.org/aboutSame link [ConnectError]

Recommended fix: Serve the PDF from a hostname without an underscore, such as the path-style S3 URL or a Coursera domain, and update the footer.

2. Malformed canonical on /partners

High

1 affected page · SiteAuditLint severity: Info

Finding: https://www.coursera.org/partners declares its canonical as https://www.coursera.org/www.coursera.org/partners.

Why it matters: A canonical pointing to a URL that does not exist gives search engines a conflicting signal about the preferred page.

URLCanonical
https://www.coursera.org/partnershttps://www.coursera.org/www.coursera.org/partners

Recommended fix: Correct the canonical to https://www.coursera.org/partners.

3. Slow server responses

High

36 affected URLs · SiteAuditLint severity: Warning

Finding: 36 URLs took longer than 1,000 ms to respond. The median among them was 1,419 ms and the slowest, a PMP certification article, took 3,905 ms.

Why it matters: Articles are a major entry point from search, and slow first responses delay them.

URLResult
https://www.coursera.org/articles/the-pmp-certification-a-guide-to-getting-started3,905 ms
https://www.coursera.org/articles/popular-cybersecurity-certifications1,398 ms

Recommended fix: Review caching on the /articles/ template, where most slow URLs sit.

4. Large HTML documents

Medium

71 affected pages · SiteAuditLint severity: Opportunity

Finding: 71 pages exceed 500 KB of HTML. The homepage is 796 KB.

Why it matters: Large documents take longer to download and parse, particularly on mobile connections.

URLHTML size
https://www.coursera.org/796 KB
https://www.coursera.org/articles/essential-it-certifications-entry-level-and-beginner598 KB

Recommended fix: Check the shared template for inlined state data and markup that can be deferred.

5. Footer link to /about/leadership redirects off-site

Low

93 affected pages · SiteAuditLint severity: Opportunity

Finding: 93 pages link to https://www.coursera.org/about/leadership, which 301 redirects to https://blog.coursera.org/leadership/.

Why it matters: A sitewide link to a redirect adds a hop on every click and crawl.

URLEvidence
https://www.coursera.org/Links to /about/leadership [301]

Recommended fix: Link the footer directly to https://blog.coursera.org/leadership/.

6. Multiple H1s and long descriptions

Low

27 pages with multiple H1s · SiteAuditLint severity: Opportunity

Finding: 27 pages contain more than one H1, with /about/terms using 5. 52 meta descriptions exceed 160 characters, including the homepage at 188.

Why it matters: A single H1 makes the main topic clear. Descriptions past 160 characters are often cut off in results.

URLEvidence
https://www.coursera.org/about/terms5 H1 tags
https://www.coursera.org/about4 H1 tags, 212-character description

Recommended fix: Reduce extra H1s to H2s in the about and certificate templates, and shorten descriptions on hub pages.

Audit limitations

Scope of this audit

The crawl was limited to 100 URLs and started from the homepage, so only URLs discovered through internal links and the XML sitemap are represented. A 100-URL crawl does not represent the entire website. Findings reflect the site at the time of the crawl on October 4, 2026. SiteAuditLint analyzed the HTML returned by the server, so content added later by JavaScript and responses that differ for automated clients may not match what a browser shows. This audit evaluates technical observations, not overall business or search performance.

The 4 URLs blocked by robots.txt are filtered search result pages, which is expected behavior.

This is an independent SiteAuditLint analysis of publicly accessible pages. It was not requested or endorsed by Coursera, and it does not imply that Coursera uses SiteAuditLint.
