Answer engine optimization and generative engine optimization start with access and structure. This audit checks which AI crawlers your robots.txt allows, whether you publish llms.txt, and which pages are written in a way AI assistants can quote.

AI assistants can only cite pages their crawlers are allowed to fetch, and they prefer content that answers a clear question directly. The AEO / GEO page under Improve brings those signals together as an Answer Engine Readiness score.

1. AI crawler access

SiteAuditLint tests your robots.txt rules against each AI user agent and shows which are allowed and which are blocked.

WarningAI crawlers blocked in robots.txt

Some AI and answer-engine crawlers are disallowed, so the site may not be cited in AI search results.

How to fix: Decide which AI crawlers you want to allow and update robots.txt accordingly.

2. llms.txt

InfoNo llms.txt file

llms.txt is an emerging convention that gives language models a curated map of your most important content.

How to fix: Consider publishing /llms.txt with a short site summary and links to key pages.

3. Answer-ready content

For each page the AEO / GEO view shows whether it has question headings and Q&A schema. Pages written as direct answers to real questions are easier for answer engines to extract and cite.

OpportunityNo question-led sections

Answer engines and AI overviews favour content that states a question and answers it directly.

How to fix: Add question-style H2 or H3 headings with a concise answer below each, and consider FAQPage markup.

4. From readiness to visibility

Readiness tells you whether AI assistants can use your pages. To see whether they actually mention and cite you, run an AI visibility check.

Frequently asked questions

Which AI crawlers are checked?

GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, CCBot and Applebot-Extended.

What is a question-led section?

A heading phrased as a question the page then answers, or FAQ and Q&A structured data. Indexable pages over 300 words with neither are flagged as an opportunity.

Is llms.txt required?

No. A missing llms.txt is informational and does not lower the score. It is a simple way to point AI tools at your most useful pages.
