100 Pages crawled35s Crawl time25 Issue typesOct 4, 2026 Audit date

Independent SiteAuditLint analysis

SiteAuditLint crawled 100 URLs on target.com. The main pattern is in the category and brand page templates: 58 of 86 HTML pages returned no title tag in the server response, and most also lacked an H1, meta description and canonical.

What stood out

58pages returned no title tag, 52 of them category (/c/) pages
67pages have no meta description and 63 have no H1
79URLs responded in over 1 second, including the homepage at 1,586 ms
7help pages canonicalize to a URL with a double slash (//help)
18pages link to bullseyeshop.com, which returned 404

Overall assessment

target.com returned clean status codes: no 4xx or 5xx responses, HTTPS throughout, and single-hop redirects from the HTTP versions. The issues sit in the HTML that category pages send before JavaScript runs.

The 52 category pages and 5 brand pages in the crawl returned no title, no meta description, no H1 and no canonical in the raw HTML. These elements may be added in the browser, but search engines and AI crawlers that read the initial response see an untitled page. A check with JavaScript rendering would confirm what rendered output contains.

Three items deserve attention first: server-side titles and headings on category templates, the double-slash canonical on help pages, and response times, which exceeded one second on 79 of 100 URLs.

Audit methodology

SiteAuditLint started from the website's homepage and crawled up to 100 URLs by following discoverable internal links and the URLs listed in the XML sitemap. Results represent the URLs reached during the crawl and do not constitute a complete audit of the entire website.

Major findings

1. Missing title tags on category pages

High

58 affected URLs · SiteAuditLint severity: Critical

Finding: 58 pages returned no title element: 52 category pages under /c/, 5 brand pages under /b/ and the orders page.

Why it matters: The title tag is a primary input for search result titles. When it is absent from the server response, crawlers that do not render JavaScript see no title. See on-page SEO checks.

https://www.target.com/b/apple/all-deals/-/N-5y3ejZakkos?type=products&content_id=STORY-48208No title tag

Recommended fix: Render the title, meta description, H1 and canonical server-side in the category and brand templates.

2. Missing H1 and meta descriptions

Medium

67 pages without a meta description · SiteAuditLint severity: Warning

Finding: 67 pages have no meta description and 63 have no H1. The same /c/ and /b/ templates account for most of both.

Why it matters: The H1 and description give crawlers the page topic and a snippet. Their absence on category pages matches the missing titles above.

URLEvidence
https://www.target.com/b/apple/-/N-5y3ejNo H1, no meta description
https://www.target.com/account?prehydrateClick=trueNo H1, no meta description

Recommended fix: Address in the same template change as the title tag.

3. Canonicals with a double slash

High

7 help pages · SiteAuditLint severity: Info

Finding: 7 help pages declare a canonical with a doubled slash, for example https://www.target.com//help instead of https://www.target.com/help.

Why it matters: A canonical should point to the exact preferred URL. A path with // is a different URL, so the canonical signal points away from the page itself.

URLCanonical
https://www.target.com/helphttps://www.target.com//help
https://www.target.com/help/contact-ushttps://www.target.com//help/contact-us
https://www.target.com/help/articles/news-safety/product-recallshttps://www.target.com//help/articles/news-safety/product-recalls

Recommended fix: Fix the path concatenation in the help template so the canonical uses a single slash.

4. Missing canonical tags

Medium

68 affected pages · SiteAuditLint severity: Opportunity

Finding: 68 of 86 HTML pages have no canonical tag. Only 8 are self-referencing.

Why it matters: Category URLs accept parameters such as content_id and type. Without a canonical, each variant can be treated as a separate page.

URLEvidence
https://www.target.com/b/apple/-/N-5y3ejNo canonical
https://www.target.com/account?prehydrateClick=trueNo canonical

Recommended fix: Add a self-referencing canonical that strips tracking parameters on category, brand and listing templates.

5. Slow server responses

High

79 affected URLs · SiteAuditLint severity: Warning

Finding: 79 of 100 URLs took more than 1,000 ms to respond. The median among them was 1,428 ms and the slowest was 2,420 ms.

Why it matters: Slow first responses delay rendering for visitors and reduce how many pages crawlers fetch per visit.

URLResult
https://www.target.com/1,586 ms
https://www.target.com/account?prehydrateClick=true1,354 ms

Recommended fix: Review edge caching for category and help pages, which made up most of the slow URLs.

6. Broken link to bullseyeshop.com

Low

19 affected pages · SiteAuditLint severity: Warning

Finding: 19 pages link to external URLs that return 404. 18 of them point to https://www.bullseyeshop.com/, which appears in a shared footer or account component.

Why it matters: A single broken link in a shared component repeats on every page that uses it. See broken link checker.

https://www.target.com/account?prehydrateClick=truehttps://www.bullseyeshop.com/ [404]
https://www.target.com/guest-privacyhttps://www.bullseyeshop.com/ [404]

Recommended fix: Update or remove the bullseyeshop.com link in the shared component.

7. Missing structured data and Open Graph

Low

85 pages without structured data · SiteAuditLint severity: Opportunity

Finding: 85 of 86 HTML pages have no structured data in the raw HTML, and 81 have incomplete Open Graph tags. The homepage is missing og:image.

Why it matters: Structured data and Open Graph tags describe the page to search engines and social platforms.

Recommended fix: Add Organization or WebSite markup to the homepage and BreadcrumbList markup to category templates, served in the initial HTML.

What's working well

  • No 4xx or 5xx responses across 100 crawled URLs.
  • HTTP and non-www versions redirect to HTTPS in a single 301 hop.
  • All nine AI crawlers checked are allowed, and an llms.txt file is published.
  • No duplicate titles and no multiple H1s among pages that had them.
  • Cart, checkout-related and account URLs are excluded through robots.txt.
  • No mixed content, missing HSTS or missing viewport tags.

Priority fixes

  1. Serve titles, H1s and descriptions server-side on category pagesOne template change addresses the largest finding group. Pages affected: 58
  2. Correct the double-slash canonical on help pagesA small template fix with a direct canonical impact. Pages affected: 7
  3. Add canonicals to category and brand templatesCovers parameter variants. Pages affected: 68
  4. Improve response timesStart with category pages. Pages affected: 79
  5. Replace the bullseyeshop.com linkOne shared component. Pages affected: 19

On-page counts (titles, descriptions, headings, canonicals) are measured across the 86 URLs that returned an HTML page with a 200 status.

Audit limitations

Scope of this audit

The crawl was limited to 100 URLs and started from the homepage, so only URLs discovered through internal links and the XML sitemap are represented. A 100-URL crawl does not represent the entire website. Findings reflect the site at the time of the crawl on October 4, 2026. SiteAuditLint analyzed the HTML returned by the server, so content added later by JavaScript and responses that differ for automated clients may not match what a browser shows. This audit evaluates technical observations, not overall business or search performance.

SiteAuditLint analyzes the HTML returned by the server. Titles, headings and canonicals that target.com adds with JavaScript after load are not reflected in these counts.

The 8 URLs blocked by robots.txt (cart, membership purchase and similar paths) were not fetched, which is expected behavior.

This is an independent SiteAuditLint analysis of publicly accessible pages. It was not requested or endorsed by Target, and it does not imply that Target uses SiteAuditLint.
