Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) structures content so search engines, voice assistants, and AI systems can lift a direct, accurate answer from your page. It focuses on questions: identifying the ones your audience asks and answering them clearly and early.

This lesson covers answer-first writing, question-based headings, featured snippet formats, FAQ and HowTo patterns, structured data, and how to audit pages for answer readiness. It complements the GEO lesson.

1. What AEO is

An answer engine returns an answer rather than a list of pages. Featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes, voice assistants, knowledge panels, and AI Overviews all select a short passage that resolves the question. AEO makes your page the easiest place to find that passage. For a full definition, see what answer engine optimization is.

2. Finding the questions

SourceWhat it reveals
People Also AskRelated questions Google groups with a topic
Search Console queriesQuestion phrasing that already brings impressions
Support tickets and sales callsReal customer language and objections
Forums and communitiesFollow-up questions and edge cases
AI assistantsSub-questions an assistant covers when answering a prompt

Group questions by intent: definition (what is), process (how to), comparison (X vs Y), decision (which, should I), and troubleshooting (why is). See keyword research for AI search.

3. Answer-first writing

Place a direct answer of roughly 40 to 60 words immediately after the question, then expand with detail, examples, and exceptions. This inverted pyramid structure serves snippet extraction, voice answers, and readers who scan.

Rewriting for a direct answer

BeforeH2: About canonical tags
Canonical tags have a long history...
The answer is buried in the third paragraph.
AfterH2: What is a canonical tag?
A canonical tag is an HTML element that tells search engines which URL is the preferred version of a page...
The heading asks, the first sentence answers.

The first sentence should make sense if it is the only sentence a system extracts.

4. Match the answer format

Question typeBest formatSnippet type
What is, who isShort definition paragraphParagraph

Compare, costs, specsHTML tableTable
Yes or noYes or no, then a reasonParagraph

5. Question-based headings

Using the actual question as an H2 or H3 signals exactly what the next passage answers. Keep one question per section and keep the heading hierarchy logical, as covered in the Headings lesson. SiteAuditLint flags pages with no question-based headings where answer content is expected.

6. Structured data for answers

Schema markup such as FAQPage, HowTo, QAPage, Article, Product, and Organization clarifies what a page contains. Google limits FAQ and HowTo rich results to certain sites, so do not rely on them for visual features, but the markup can still help systems interpret content. Markup must match visible content. See schema markup for AI.

7. Common AEO mistakes

FAQ padding

Adding generic questions to every page with no real search demand.

Buried answers

Long introductions before the answer appears.

Answers inside images

Text in graphics or tabs that loads only on click.

Vague answers

It depends without explaining what it depends on.

Duplicate FAQs

The same questions and answers repeated across many pages.

8. Auditing answer readiness

  1. List target questionsMap each priority question to one page.
  2. Check heading coverageConfirm each question appears as a heading.
  3. Check the first sentenceConfirm the answer appears directly after the heading.
  4. Check formatMatch paragraphs, lists, and tables to question type.
  5. Validate schemaTest markup and confirm it matches visible content.

The guide on optimizing content for answer engines includes further examples.

9. Practical exercise: Rewrite one page

Key takeaways

  • AEO structures content so answer engines can extract a direct answer.
  • Research real questions from search data, customers, and AI assistants.
  • Place a concise answer immediately after each question heading.
  • Match the format to the question: paragraph, list, or table.
  • Structured data clarifies content but must match what is visible.
  • Avoid FAQ padding and answers hidden in images or interactions.

Knowledge check

1. Where should the direct answer appear?
2. Which format suits a how to question?
3. What is a risk of FAQ padding?
4. What must structured data match?
