SiteAuditLint comparisons

Ahrefs and Semrush are the two big SEO research suites, and most comparisons stop there. This one adds SiteAuditLint because the suites overlap heavily on research but both treat site auditing as a secondary tool. Many teams pick one suite for research and run a dedicated crawler for audits. Here is how the two suites differ, and where an audit crawler fits next to either.

Both suites crawl the web to build their own backlink index, and both publish large figures for how many live links and referring domains they track. Ahrefs has long been regarded as the link-research specialist, with Domain Rating as its headline metric. Semrush scores domains with Authority Score, which blends backlinks with traffic signals.

Index-size claims are hard to compare like for like, because each vendor counts and refreshes differently. The practical test is coverage for your own niche: export the referring domains for your site and two competitors from each tool and compare what each finds.

SiteAuditLint does not crawl the web for links. Pro imports a backlink export from either suite and checks it against your live crawl, flagging broken pages, non-indexable pages and redirects that still hold backlinks. That works the same whichever suite you pick.

Keyword database size and research workflow

Semrush built its reputation on keyword data, with a large multi-country database and the Keyword Magic Tool for expanding seed terms into topic groups. Ahrefs' Keywords Explorer covers similar ground with click-based metrics and parent topic grouping. For most markets both are deep enough; the difference shows up in smaller countries and long-tail languages, where testing your own seed keywords in each tool is the only reliable comparison.

A technical crawler adds a different input to keyword work: it shows which existing pages are thin, duplicated, or missing question-led sections, so new keyword targets land on pages that can actually rank and be cited.

Content Marketing toolkit vs Content Explorer

Semrush groups its content features into a Content Marketing toolkit, sold separately from the SEO Toolkit, for topic research, writing assistance and content audits. Ahrefs centres content research on Content Explorer, for finding popular pages and link-worthy topics, alongside newer AI writing tools. Check which plan includes each, since both vendors have been reorganising plans.

SiteAuditLint covers the technical side of content quality on every crawled page: thin content under 200 words, exact and near-duplicate pages, missing or duplicate titles and descriptions, and no question-led sections for answer engines.

User seat pricing and the cost of a team

Both suites price per user. The entry plans include one seat, and every additional person costs extra each month, so a five-person team pays several times the headline price. Higher tiers raise limits and include more features, but the per-seat model stays.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ahrefs or Semrush better?

It depends on the work. Ahrefs is widely preferred for backlink research and Domain Rating. Semrush is broader, with a large keyword database and separate toolkits for content and marketing. Test both on your own niche with free trials or limited accounts before committing.

Which has the bigger backlink index, Ahrefs or Semrush?

Both publish large index figures, but they count and refresh links differently, so headline numbers are hard to compare. Export referring domains for your own site and competitors from each tool to see which covers your niche better.

Do Ahrefs and Semrush charge per user?

Yes. Both include one seat on entry plans and charge for each additional user, so team size has a big effect on the total cost.

Can SiteAuditLint replace Ahrefs or Semrush?

No for research: SiteAuditLint has no backlink index or keyword database. Yes for technical audits: it crawls unlimited URLs on Pro, and it imports backlink exports from either suite to find broken pages that still have links.

What is the cheapest way to get research and audits?

One research suite plus a one-time audit licence. At list prices over three years, Ahrefs Lite plus SiteAuditLint Pro costs about $3,969, and Semrush Pro plus SiteAuditLint Pro about $4,323, for one user.
